    How we calculated this
    1. Room 1: 2 × (12 + 12) ft × 8 ft = 384 sq ft of wall − 1 door × 20 − 1 window × 15 = 349 sq ft.
    2. 349 sq ft × $1.20 per sq ft = $418.80 labor.
    3. Paint: 349 sq ft × 2 coats ÷ 350–400 sq ft per gallon ≈ 2 gallons (rounded up).
    Book 5 hours online

Online booking sells technician time at $100/hour (2-hour minimum), rounded up to whole hours; a 5% card processing fee is added only when you pay online, no sales tax. The dispatcher confirms the final price before work starts.

Real arithmetic with our rates: wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height, minus about 20 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window. Paint is estimated at 350–400 sq ft per gallon per coat, rounded up.

    Single-story house, 2,000 sq ft footprint, 2 doors, 10 windows — exterior walls1,599 sq ft$2,398.508–10 gal

How the bedroom works out: 2 × (12 + 12) ft × 8 ft = 384 sq ft of wall, minus one door (20 sq ft) and one window (15 sq ft) = 349 sq ft. At $1.20 per sq ft that is $418.80 of labor. Two coats need 349 × 2 ÷ 400–350 ≈ 2 gallons. The accent wall comes out at $115.20, below the $200 visit minimum, so it is billed as the minimum — or combined with other jobs on the same visit.

    What the price includes

    • Painting labor for the surface you entered, with the number of coats you choose
    • Walls, and ceilings when you tick “Paint the ceiling too”
    • An insured, background-checked technician with the tools for the job
    • A price confirmed by the dispatcher before work starts
    • Clean-up when the job is done and our workmanship warranty

    What is not included

    • Paint and materials. Bring your own, or we pick up the colors you choose.
    • Work outside the painted area. Larger drywall repair, popcorn ceiling repair or wallpaper are quoted separately and approved by you first.
    • Sales tax. There is none. A 5% card processing fee applies only when you pay online.

    How to measure your walls

    1. Measure the room. Length and width along the floor, in feet. Round to the nearest half foot; the calculator does the rest.
    2. Measure the ceiling height. Most rooms are 8, 9 or 10 ft. For walls you are not painting, leave them out and enter the square footage directly.
    3. Count doors and windows. The calculator subtracts about 20 sq ft for each door and 15 sq ft for each window. Large sliding doors or picture windows take away more, so count them twice.
    4. Decide on the ceiling. A ceiling is length × width. Tick the box to add it.
    5. Exterior walls. Walk around the house and add up the wall lengths (the perimeter), then multiply by the wall height. No tape measure? Enter the footprint and the number of stories: the calculator treats the house as a square and uses 10 ft of wall per story, a rough but useful first number.

Not sure about your numbers? Send the estimate anyway with a few photos and the dispatcher checks it. For a list of small jobs besides painting, the handyman cost calculator compares pay-as-you-go with a membership.

    Painting cost questions

How much does interior painting cost per square foot?

Interior painting labor at Handyman Gold Hands is $1.20 per square foot of painted surface (walls, and ceilings if you include them). Paint and materials are not included. A 12 × 12 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings has about 349 sq ft of wall after the door and window, so the labor is about $418.80.

How much does exterior painting cost per square foot?

Exterior painting labor is $1.50 per square foot of wall surface, labor only. Measure the perimeter of the house and multiply by the wall height, or enter the footprint and number of stories in the calculator, then subtract doors and windows.

What does painting cost per square foot in Miami and Florida?

The calculator uses the same two rates for Miami, Tampa and every other city we serve: $1.20 per sq ft for interiors and $1.50 per sq ft for exteriors, labor only, no sales tax. The dispatcher confirms the final price for your home before any work starts. See painting in Miami and painting in Tampa.

    Does the price include paint?

No. The per-square-foot price is labor only. You can supply the paint, or we pick up the colors you choose; either way you approve the total before we start.

How many gallons of paint do I need?

One gallon covers roughly 350–400 sq ft per coat. Multiply your paintable area by the number of coats and divide by that range, then round up. The 12 × 12 bedroom (349 sq ft, 2 coats) needs about 2 gallons; with the ceiling (493 sq ft) about 3. Dark colors, fresh drywall and rough surfaces can take more.

    Is there a minimum charge?

Yes. Every visit is billed at least our 2-hour minimum, 2 × $100 = $200. If a small job such as one accent wall comes out below that in the calculator, the visit costs $200.

How long does painting a room take?

It depends on the size, the prep the walls need, the number of coats and drying time between them. A standard bedroom with prep, two coats and clean-up is usually a one-day job; larger rooms, ceilings and exteriors are scheduled after the dispatcher reviews your estimate and photos.

Can I choose my paint colors in the calculator?

Yes. Open “Choose colors” and pick up to three — walls, trim and an accent — from a curated list of Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr and PPG colors, searchable by name or code. Your picks are added to the estimate you send us. Colors on screen are approximate, so check a physical sample.

Can I book the painting job online?

Yes. Online booking sells technician time at $100 per hour with a 2-hour minimum; the calculator converts your estimate to hours and links to Hourly Handyman booking. For a full day the Full Day Handyman at $749 is cheaper than 8 hourly hours. A 5% card processing fee is added only when you pay online; there is no sales tax.
