The joint between a bathtub and its wall tile had old caulk that was cracked, lifting and stained. The after photo shows a clean, even white bead along the same joint.
Typical steps for this job
The photos show the start and the finish; these are the usual steps in between:
- The old caulk was cut and pulled out along the whole joint.
- The joint was cleaned of residue and left to dry.
- A new bead of bathroom silicone was run along the tub edge.
- The bead was tooled smooth and left to cure before the tub was used.
New caulk laid over old caulk does not stick, so the old bead has to come out completely. Water behind a failed seal is how mold and swollen drywall start behind the tile.
