Shelf & Closet Installation: the short answer

Handyman Gold Hands installs shelves and closet systems: floating shelves, wall shelves on brackets, wire and closet systems, closet rods and garage shelving, anchored into studs or masonry so they hold what you put on them. Shelf work is $100 per hour with a 2-hour minimum ($200 minimum visit), priced from a photo, in 14 US metro areas. Insured and bonded; the price is approved before work starts.

What's included

  • Floating shelves on hidden brackets, leveled and anchored
  • Wall shelves on brackets or standards and brackets
  • Wire shelving and closet organizer systems from a kit
  • Closet rods, shelf-and-rod combos and rod supports
  • Garage shelving and wall-mounted storage racks
  • Anchoring into studs, concrete block or brick
  • Repairing closet walls and old holes before the new system goes up
  • Removing an old wire or wood system that is sagging or pulling out

What we don't do: We install shelving and closet systems you buy, from a store or a kit; we do not design custom closets or build cabinetry from raw lumber.

How it works

  1. Send a photo. A photo of the wall or closet with its width, and a link to or photo of the shelves or system you bought. Tell us what the shelves will hold.
  2. Get the price. The dispatcher replies with a price at $100 per hour and checks that the system fits the space before you open the boxes.
  3. We install it. The technician finds the studs or masonry, sets the shelves level and tight to the wall, and cleans up.

$100 per hour, 2-hour minimum ($200). A longer list fits a Half Day ($399, 4 hours) or Full Day ($749, 8 hours). Online payments add a 5% card processing fee; no sales tax.

Shelves fail at the wall, not the board

Almost every sagging shelf we take down was hung on drywall anchors alone. Drywall holds a screw by a few millimeters of gypsum; a shelf of books pulls that out over time. We put brackets and floating-shelf rails into studs, and use rated toggle anchors only where the load is light and no stud lines up.

Floating shelves are the least forgiving: the hidden bracket has to be dead level and tight to the wall, or the shelf tips forward once it is loaded. We check the wall for flatness first, and on concrete block or brick we use masonry anchors rated for the load.

Wire closet systems hang on a top track or on clips every stud or two. In closets where the old system pulled out of the wall, we repair the drywall first, then mount the new track into framing so it does not happen again.

Shelf & Closet Installation — FAQ

How much does shelf installation cost?

$100 per hour with a 2-hour minimum, so the smallest visit is $200. There is no per-shelf price: send a photo of the wall and the shelves to +1 (786) 788-8714 or through the form and you get the price before you book. A closet system and a few wall shelves usually go on one visit.

How long does it take to install shelves or a closet system?

A few wall or floating shelves usually fit inside the 2-hour minimum. A full wire or closet organizer system takes longer, more if the old system has to come out and the wall needs repair first. The photo quote tells you what to expect.

What should I have ready before the visit?

The shelves or the closet kit delivered, with every box and the hardware bag, and the closet emptied. Know roughly what will go on the shelves: books and tools need a different anchor than towels. We bring tools and standard hardware.

Can you put shelves on concrete, brick or plaster?

Yes. Concrete block and brick get masonry bits and concrete anchors; plaster is drilled slowly and anchored into the framing where we find it. On drywall, loaded shelves go into studs.

I rent or live in a condo. Can I install shelves?

Check your lease: most allow shelves if the holes are patched when you move out, and we can patch, sand and touch them up later through drywall repair. In condos, the association may want a certificate of insurance before we come; we send it, usually the same day, and work inside the building’s hours.
