Door Repair & Lock Installation: the short answer

Handyman Gold Hands repairs and installs doors and door hardware: sticking or sagging interior doors, hinges and strike plates, knobs, levers and deadbolts, prehung interior doors, sliding closet doors and pet doors. Door work is $100 per hour with a 2-hour minimum ($200 minimum visit), priced from a photo before you book, in 14 US metro areas. We are insured and bonded, and you approve the price before work starts.

What's included

  • Interior doors that stick, rub or no longer latch
  • Sagging doors and strike plates: hinges tightened or replaced, latch realigned
  • Door hardware: knobs, levers, hinges, stops and closers
  • Deadbolt installation and replacement, including boring a door that has none
  • Prehung interior doors set in an existing opening
  • Sliding and bifold closet doors: track, guides and adjustment
  • Pet doors cut into interior and exterior doors
  • Weatherstripping and door sweeps on exterior doors
  • Door trim and frame repair after a kick-in, rot or a pet

What we don't do: Locksmith services such as rekeying, lockouts or master-key systems; garage doors and garage door openers; roller replacement on sliding glass patio doors.

How it works

  1. Send a photo. One photo of the whole door and one close-up of the problem: the gap at the top, the latch, the hinge side or the lock.
  2. Get the price. The dispatcher replies with a price at $100 per hour and what to buy, if anything: the lockset, hinges or a prehung door in the right size and swing.
  3. We fix it. The technician brings the tools and standard hardware, fits the door, checks that it opens, closes and latches without force, and cleans up.

$100 per hour, 2-hour minimum ($200). A longer list fits a Half Day ($399, 4 hours) or Full Day ($749, 8 hours). Online payments add a 5% card processing fee; no sales tax.

What usually goes wrong with a door

Most interior doors that stop closing have not warped. A hinge screw has pulled out of the jamb, the door drops on the latch side and rubs the frame. A longer screw into the framing behind the jamb often fixes it; a split hinge mortise needs filling first.

A door that closes but will not stay shut usually has a strike plate out of line with the latch. We move the strike, not the door. On exterior doors we also check the weatherstripping and sweep: if you see daylight around a closed door, air and water get in too.

For a new deadbolt, buy one that matches your door thickness. A door without one is bored with a jig so the bolt and strike line up, and the strike gets long screws into the framing.

Door Repair & Lock Installation — FAQ

How much does door repair cost?

Door work is $100 per hour with a 2-hour minimum, so the smallest visit is $200. There is no fixed price list for doors: send a photo to +1 (786) 788-8714 or through the form and you get the price before you book. A longer list fits a Half Day ($399) or Full Day ($749).

How long does it take to fix a door or install a deadbolt?

A sticking door, a loose hinge or a new lever or deadbolt usually fits inside the 2-hour minimum. Hanging a prehung interior door with trim usually takes a few hours. The photo quote tells you what to expect.

What should I have ready before the visit?

The hardware you picked, in the box: lockset, deadbolt, hinges, pet door or prehung door. A new door needs the same width and swing as the old one. Not bought yet? Send the photo first and we tell you what to buy, or we pick it up and add the receipt to the invoice.

Can you work on metal, fiberglass or solid wood doors?

Yes. Hollow-core, solid wood, fiberglass and steel doors all take hardware; the bits and saw change, not the job. A pet door in an exterior door is cut with a blade for that material and the cut edge is sealed.

I rent or live in a condo. Can I change the lock?

Many leases and condo rules require the landlord or the association to have a key, so ask before you replace a lock; we install the new hardware and you hand over a key. Associations often want a certificate of insurance before a vendor comes in. We send it, usually the same day, and book the visit inside the building’s work hours.
